Why does the smell of Lavender Oil make me feel nauseous, and what could this mean?

I am becoming more interested in aromatherapy and reflexology (even started training in reflexology last year until a change in family circumstances dictated I could not finish the course), and am aware of the many and diverse properties of Lavander oil. I want to like it, but the smell of lavender makes me feel really nauseous, and if it is too strong I am sick. I am so sensitive to the smell that I can detect the lavender ‘notes’ in many modern perfumes and colognes and really cannot use them.

What could be the reason for my response? (sensible answers only please)
EDIT
k o – lol, the elderly aunt was a suggestion someone else proffered some time ago, and I’m not discounting it. Strangely enough, I’m not diabetic but I do have bouts of hypoglycaemia if I’ve not eaten enough protein during the day.

Jen D, thanks for your contribution. I agree about the smells of modern cosmetic departments – awful. By the way, I love patchoulli, it’s my favourite.

if i remember correctly, lavender oil contains something called ketones which can make people with diabetes and possibly other probs(dont know which, sorry)feel ill.-of course it might just be pschological-maybe when you were a baby a terrifying elderly aunt used to kiss you whilst wearing overpowering lavender perfume.ADDENDUM—i found an interesting page which details how lavender oil can rapidly lower blood sugar ,given below
