Aromatherapy And Meditation

Many people who meditate or pray appreciate the wisdom of the ancients and burn fragrant incense during these quiet and tranquil times. Aromatherapy assists the spiritual seeker by clearing the air and providing an environment that encourages deep thought, reflection, and peace. There are many ways to incorporate Aromatherapy into your times of devotion, meditation, and prayer. First, you may follow the wisdom of the ages and burn incense based upon the spiritual properties that were given to them thousands of years ago. For example, some herbs were used to purify an area before beginning a time of worship, while other herbs were actually used as offerings to the “evil one” or dark side. Yarrow, for instance was known for being an herb that was used for incantations and divination, while Hyssop was used for cleaning an area and purifying before worship. Frankincense still holds a strong meaning during worship within the Muslim faith.
You can burn incense during your times of meditation, prayer, and devotion as well.

Aromatherapy candles may be used during times of meditation and prayer. Burning candles have been a significant part of worship and they are still used today in many Roman Catholic ceremonies as well as in other practices. Today, many paraffin candles contain soot and pollution causing agents so try to choose natural organic candles instead. Soy Wax candles are made out of organic Soy and are known for their ability to “burn clean”. This means that they leave no soot behind, or have any pollution causing agents that can be irritating to those with allergies, asthma, or colds. By burning Aromatherapy candles while meditating or praying, the pleasing aromas will help clear your mind, removing negative thoughts, tension, and emotions. Here are some herbs that will help with different emotions that you can use during your meditation and prayer times.

Frankincense has been used for thousands of years during prayer and meditation and is a wonderful herb to add to your times of meditation. Along with Frankincense, Patchouli has been used for stability and centering. Some of the most popular herbs used for calming the mind include Lavender, Chamomile, and Clary Sage. Citrus blends such as Orange, Lemon, and Melissa have been used for energy and vitality. Hyssop and Clove are well revered for their cleansing and purifying properties. Rose oil has been used for its tranquility. Ylang Ylang, Nutmeg, and Cinnamon create a sensual mood. Rosemary has been used to nurture creativity and innovation.
Juniper Berry and Basil are both mental stimulants, and these will improve your brain power and memory during your times of meditation and prayer. They can be powerfully used to reach deep within the mind for healing of memories and trauma. Lilac and Violet will help create sympathy and compassion and Clove, Cinnamon, and Nutmeg are associated with wealth, prosperity, and good success. For those recovering from addictions, Bergamot, Fennel, Grapefruit, and Eucalyptus are powerful for reducing cravings, and instilling peacefulness and will help purify the body.
