Moisturize During The Winter Months With Aromatherapy

Winter can be very drying and harsh to the skin. Winds blow, chapping faces and lips, and when inside, artificial heat can dry out the skin. The result is dry, peeling, and chapped skin. Faces and hands are often affected more than other parts during the winter months. This time of year requires you to take special precautions for the beauty and health of your skin.

Dry skin is not only irritating, but it can be painful. Sometimes chapped skin can become so irritated that it is a great source of discomfort. It is important that you drink plenty of water during the winter months, to keep the skin hydrated from the inside as well as outside. Using a good lotion is also important to maintaining skin’s moisture during winter.

Aromatherapy can be very benefit to keeping the skin moisturized during these drying times. Making your own bath oils, body lotions, and face creams is just one of the ways Aromatherapy can help you. You can make lotions and creams by adding essential oils to your creams and lotions that you have on hand, or you can make your own lotion and cream bases. You an also find lotion and cream bases available in health food stores. You just simply add the essential oils that you choose to your base creams, creating your own personal creams.

You can also make your own bath oil by adding essential oils to carrier oil. Carrier oil is used to dilute the potency of the essential oil before it comes in contact with the skin. A good example of carrier oil includes Sweet almond Oil, Jojoba Oil, Macadamia oil, and Sunflower oil.

Here is a recipe for restoring moisture to skin that has been dried out from the winter months. Using 1 ounce of carrier oil, (Sweet Almond or Sunflower Oil are good choices), add 2 drops of Patchouli Oil, 2 drops of Sandalwood oil, and 2 drops of Myrrh. Blend together and use this oil in your bath water, or as a lotion. You can also use this oil for massages. To feel its full effectiveness, heat it up by placing it in an amber colored bottle, then placing the bottle in a bowl of hot water. This oil will help restore moisture and the scent is nearly intoxicating. It is a wonderfully refreshing and rejuvenating treat for the entire body.

Along with your aromatherapy treatments, make sure that you are taking adequate steps to protect your skin from the outside elements. Always cover your face when going outside for extended periods of time. This may be as simple as pulling your scarf up over your face.

For late winter nights, you may want to relax by curling up with a good book and a nice cup of Chamomile tea. Chamomile is very relaxing and will help take the chill off of cold winter nights. Winter is a beautiful time of year, and there is no reason why your skin has to suffer and lose its beauty during these months.
