Sunburns And Aromatherapy

Sunburns are the result of too much direct sunlight. Though many people understand the importance of avoiding the sun, sometimes people accidentally become sunburned. This may be due to not applying sunscreen correctly, or not reapplying it after prolonged exposure at the beach. Many people don’t remember to reapply sunscreen after swimming and may inadvertently become sunburned. Sunburns are not only painful but they can be very dangerous. Too many sunburns can damage the skin, cause premature aging, and lead to skin cancer. The most effective treatment for sunburn is prevention.

If you are dealing with a sunburn you need to understand that it is just as serious as if you had been burned by a stove or open fire. Sunburns have degrees like other burns. Some sunburns may cause severe blisters on the skin. It is important to treat your sunburn with the same diligence and care that you would for a serious burn.

One of the most recommended treatments for a sunburn is Aloe Vera gel. Aloe Vera gel comes from the inside of the Aloe Vera plant. You can make your own Aloe Vera gel by cutting open one of the leaves from the plant and scraping the Aloe Vera gel. This gel may be applied directly to the sunburn for immediate relief.

Another great remedy for a sunburn includes using a blend of six drops of Peppermint oil and four drops of Lavender oil. Blend these oils together and apply to the sunburn. Peppermint oil is very cooling and Lavender is very soothing to the skin.

You can also add the Peppermint oil or Lavender oil to a base of Aloe Vera gel. This is a wonderful remedy that will take the sting out of the burn while soothing and cooling the skin.

Another effective remedy is to add the Peppermint oil and Lavender oil to a nice cooling bath. Lukewarm water may be the preferred temperature, but be careful that you don’t become chilled. Peppermint can become very cooling and if you feel that you are getting too cool, you may need to reduce the amount of Peppermint oil for your bath. Once the sunburn begins the healing process you can also add lotions and oils that will keep the skin well hydrated and moist. You may continue to apply Aloe Vera gel, but you may want to start adding moisture. When the pain and sting of the sunburn has subsided, try adding a nice lotion or cream to prevent the skin from peeling and for keeping it soft and supple.

It is very important to keep children out of direct sunlight and prevent them from being burned. Make sure that you keep applying sunscreen especially after swimming or prolonged exercise.

Some essential oils will make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Make sure that you read all of the safety precautions and stay out of the sun while using these essential oils. Also, if you are pregnant be careful in choosing various essential oils. Many oils may cause damage to your unborn baby or put you into premature labor. Finally, treat your essential oils as if they were medicine.
